D. Mustafa Turan wrote, in “The Donmeh Jews”, that Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab was a descendant of a family of Donmeh Jews from Turkey.
The Donmeh were descendants of followers of the infamous false-messiah of Judaism, Shabbetai Tzevi, who shocked the Jewish world in 1666 by converting to Islam. Viewing it as a sacred mystery, Tzevi’s followers imitated his conversion to Islam, though secretly keeping to their Kabbalistic doctrines. In Europe, the Shabbeteans were eventually led a century later by Jacob Frank, claiming to be a reincarnation of Tzevi. And, according to Rabbi Antelman in To Eliminate the Opiate, to them belonged the Rothschilds who had a hand in the founding of the Bavarian Illuminati. The Donmeh community of Turkey were concentrated in the city of Salonika, which became a hotbed of Masonic activity, and from which the Young Turk movement evolved, which aided in the collapse of the Muslim empire of the Ottoman Turks. There is evidence that Ataturk himself, the founder of the modern Turkish state, was of Donmeh origin as well.
Turan maintains that Abdul Wahhab’s grandfather, Sulayman was actually Shulman, having belonged to the Jewish community of Bursa in Turkey.
From there he settled in Damascus, where he feigned Islam, but was apparently expelled for practicing sorcery.
He then fled to Egypt and he again faced condemnation, so made his way he to the Hijaz, where he got married and fathered Abdul Wahhab.

So the Donmeh are crypto Muslims
Their elders speak Turkish in an accent heavily flavored by Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish of Sephardi Jews.
Their beliefs and rituals are largely unknown to outsiders.
They rarely go to mosques. They marry mainly among themselves and live in the neighborhoods on the European side – Nisantasi, Sisli and Haskoy – where most of the city’s Jews also reside.
But they are not Jews either. The Jewish community wants nothing to do with them. “As far as we’re concerned,” says Rabbi Yitzhak Haleva, deputy chief rabbi of Istanbul, “there are only Jews and Muslims. There’s nothing in between.”
So who are the Sabbateans?
Turkish author Ilgaz Zorlu
Ilgaz Zorlu, a 30-year-old accountant from Istanbul, has written a tell-all about the Sabbateans, a Jewish sect that takes its name from the self-proclaimed messiah of the 17th century, Shabbtai Tzvi.
Following Tzevi (who ultimately chose conversion over death), the Sabbateans converted to Islam but continued to practice Judaism in secret.
This is what Zorlu set out to explain in his book, “Yes, I Am a Salonikan”.
This volume has made its author persona non grata in the Sabbatean community. After centuries of secrecy and denial, Zorlu is determined to break the silence, to put the issue on the public agenda, and to prove that the Sabbateans are actually crypto-Jews, that their Muslim appearances are nothing more than a sham.
