News from Stop Smart Meters UK

~ You don’t need a majority vote to refuse a smart meter. ~

Hello!

If you are not following us on Facebook, Twitter or via our News feed, here are some links you might find interesting:

1. On Saturday, the Telegraph published a must-read article that is ideal to share with unaware friends and family: “Is Wi-Fi Making Your Child Ill?“.  We’ve cached it in full on our website just in case it disappears.  And, if you’re wondering, smart meters = constant Wi-Fi + mobile phone transmissions (up to 190,000 pulses per day, 365 days a year).

2. Yesterday, 190 scientists from 38 nations submitted the International EMF Scientist Appeal to the United Nations, UN member states and the World Health Organization (WHO) for more protective exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields (EMF) and wireless technology in the face of increasing evidence of risk. Dr Martin Blank has posted a 3-minute primer on it, and the selected quotes from some of the signatories is also worth a look.

3. Underwriters with Lloyds of London are now explicitly EXCLUDING cover for health effects from wireless technologies.

4. A new peer-reviewed study published by the International Journal of Oncology confirms: “Mobile phone radiation causes brain tumors and should be classified as a probable human carcinogen (2A)”.

5. Do you work for a company or public sector organisation?  You might want to send your CIO this link for a free event on wireless health risks in a corporate environment.

6. A Youtube video explains how to disable Samsung’s “smart appliance” features and RF emissions.

7. We have published an FAQ, which at present focuses on smart WATER meter questions which are coming in thick & fast right now.

8. The Government is running a consultation on non-domestic smart meters which may have implications for domestic customers too — and there is evidence they may be considering compulsion:

“22. The roll-out strategy consultation makes proposals which apply equally across the domestic and non-domestic sectors, concerning the following: … – mandating suppliers to become DCC Users… – enacting a new and replacement obligation, which would set a date from which suppliers must take all reasonable steps to install a smart meter where a meter reaches the end of its lifetime, or where a meter is installed for the first time. The Government is minded to activate the New and Replacement Obligation in mid- 2018.
23.Individually and taken together, the proposals will help drive the deployment of SMETS2 meters and their enrolment and operation in the DCC, for both thedomestic and nondomestic markets...”.

If you want to have your say, you need to do so by 11:45pm on 15th June 2015. (Thank you, Chris)

9. The Financial Post reports that “Hackers could cripple West with a hi-tech blitz on energy-sector infrastructure“… and U.S. General (and Bilderberg attendee) Keith Alexander announces that: “We need something like an integrated air-defence system for the whole energy sector”… (see where this is going?)

10. According to this report via RT, Britain is the “most cyber-attacked country” in Europe.  So, let’s spend £12bn on making our energy & water supplies available to cyber attackers via smart meters?

11. If you missed this back in March, the Institute of Directors has blasted the UK’s smart meter scheme, saying it should be ‘halted, altered or scrapped’ to avoid an ‘unjustified, over-engineered and expensive mistake’.
Check it out.

12. Do you live in the borough/town of Bury St Edmunds? You have a vocal smart meter-opponent friend on your council – in the form of Cllr Paul Farmer.

13. Do you live in Leicester?  Time to start mobilising on this issue in your neighbourhood if you haven’t already – you’ve been chosen as “lead” for the nationwide smart meter assault.

14.  Following Edward Davey’s departure, former banker and mother of two Amber Rudd is now in charge at DECC – why not write to her and let her know your views on smart meters?  We’ll be adding her details to our Don’t Smart Meter Me notice shortly.

15. We wonder how long it will be until smart meter data is used as evidence in court – having read this from Wired.

16. “Welcome To Privacy Hell, Also Known As The Internet Of Things” writes Fast Company.

17. Not sure why your privacy is important?  Watch this superb, feature-length interview with former director and NSA whistleblower, WIlliam Binney.  https://vimeo.com/117440574

18. If you know anyone who maintains that they have “nothing to hide” in this brave new world of mass surveillance, show them this:  Venezuela is to start fingerprinting shoppers in an effort to stop people buying more FOOD than they need from one day to the next.

19. The end of privacy for benefits claimants is here as personal data to be “routinely shared”.  Just look at the list of data points being doled out…

20. It makes for awful reading, but we need to report that Rory Cellan-Jones is now using his job at the BBC to promote human microchipping.  All on the licence payer’s pounds & pennies, somebody needs to lend him a history book.

21. If you have any small Barbie fans in your family, help them avoid what should be called the new Barbie NSA Edition.  (Remind your children to never give their data to a stranger; that includes Mattle, Inc. – the huge company now manufacturing RF-emitting toy dolls.)

Until next time!
